After discovering the average number of songwriters on a UK top 30 track in 2019 was 6.7, it became apparent that being a popular music songwriter wasn't financially viable as a career. With 100 streams on Spotify only generating £0.34, I didn't want to divide that little revenue between an excessive number of co-writers.
I started using commercially available AI songwriting tools to speed up my songwriting process and develop new and interesting ideas. This grew into furthering my own research into artificial intelligence and human collaboration in music, which I focused on in my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees
In 2014, I attended Newcastle-under-Lyme College and was awarded with a D*D*D* (Triple Distinction Star) in Music. To further my education, I was accepted to study Bass Guitar in a BA (Hons) Music at The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. I decided to focus on songwriting and production as opposed to Bass Guitar and graduated with a First Class Degree. I was mentored by songwriting greats such as Keith Mullin from The Farm, Eddie Lundon from China Crisis and Sir Paul McCartney.
Rachel, to put it simply, is a fine songwriter being able to apply herself across many genres with ease. She is truly a pleasure to have in a learning environment, not only excelling with her own work but encouraging others with theirs. I found it came naturally to her to be have the ability to be independent, experimental, and collaborative all at once, and was always open and thoughtful l with approaching new concepts and ideas presented to her as well. In more than 2 decades of teaching songwriting at LIPA I have worked with so many students, and Rachel is simply one of those who stands out easily in my mind.
Alongside my research into AI and human collaboration in music, I have consistently performed in ensembles as a bassist, pianist and backing vocalist across the UK and Norway.
I have also furthered my skills as a songwriter and producer, shown in my portfolio, securing a No1 single in a regional Radio Chart in Norway.
